A beautifully detailed olive wood box, made in Sorrento Italy for tourists in Argentina Buenos Aires. Approx.1930s. The box looks like a stack of books but has a hidden compartment: a puzzle box. At the lid a decorative strip (banding) made of contrasting woods (marquetry) and a famous swallow. Only this handpainted swallow has disappeared! The box has Roman numbered book spines in the front. Now, why is this box a Secret Box, you might ask ? The key hole is hidden and can only be disclosed if you pull the upright books forward and the center spine drops to reveal the lock Slide the bottom horizontal spine to reveal the secret compartment Photo. It is practically impossible to guess so it has to be known by its owner. Excellent and complete condition with only very light signs of use due to age. The Italian town of Sorrento
