1990 Krewe of Comus Secret Society Badge Brass Hibiscus Mardi Gras New Orleans Description: A secret society badge of the Mistick Krewe of Comus, a presumably occult secret society and the oldest extant Mardi Gras carnival krewe in continued operation (founded in 1856). In the 1800s, the controversial society was highly involved in the ultimate creation and popularization of the Mardi Gras festival, which supplanted the earlier Creole Catholic festivals which predated it. Rather than comply with new city ordinances in the early 1990s,, the krewe elected to withdraw from the parades along with the other older carnival krewes. This badge is made of brass, dated 1990, and appears to be the final yearly badge issued before the Krewe's withdrawal in 1991. Condition: Rainbow Patina on the backside of the brooch
