Dovetail Copper Tea Kettle Cramp Seam Antique Copper Handle Marked 4 Coppersmith The Dovetailed bottom is a great example of early coppersmith work. Looks similar to dovetail in carpentry work however in copper the notches actually slide over the edge of the other piece and are pounded (cramped together) until they fuse into a single layer. Then molten brass is applied to the crevices along the seam to seal it (called brazing) See photos of bottom as this is a very good example of what this process looks like. This piece is an example of hand cut crenellations (notches) which is obvious due to the uneven nature of the notches. Machine punches to cut crenellations didnt come into use until late 19th century. Wonderful piece with great character and patina. Measures 6 1/2" across (not including spout) x 6" tall (not including handle) Marked "4" on Handle - see photos. Note dents on side and near handle in photographs.
