This is a beautiful vintage Kutani ware figurine from Japan, the "tama-Nori Shishi" or "Lion Riding on a Ball". The hand painting on this figurine uses such techniques as Gosu for the indigo blue lines and gosai for the thick application of red, green, white and blue pigments. These techniques bring out the vivid colors and intricate details of the lion figurine. This "Tama-Nori Shishi", symbolizes protection from misfortune and brings good fortune. It is found in many households for these reasons. Standing at almost 8" tall by 7" wide by 5 1/2" deep, it exudes a sense of elegance. His fierce expression is believed to ward off bad spirits and brings blessings. This Kutani Foo Dog would add a touch of Japanese culture to any space.
